“Ahhh… Matcha!”


Hi! You guys!… I actually have Starbucks to thank for this awesome find… Ever since I had my first iced green tea latte I’ve absolutely been hooked on this stuff, -hot or cold! It’s called Matcha and it’s a very finely ground green tea powder that literally dissolves in liquid, with none of the unpleasant green tea taste that I usually get from bagged green tea. For some reason it tastes differently than the bagged brewed tea leaves, and we all are aware of the numerous health benefits of consuming green tea, -that most folks can’t stand. But, matcha is so finely ground that is disappears in cold or hot liquid drinks… Amazing!


The full definition according to their website, “Matcha tea powder is ground from fine Japanese green tea leaves. It is the star of the centuries-old Japanese tea ceremony, and its pleasant taste and health benefits make it a favorite of many tea-lovers today. Organic matcha powder is whisked in a bowl with hot water to create a frothy, bright green, nourishing beverage. Once prepared, it is then immediately consumed in its entirety. It’s important to know where to buy the best quality matcha powder and tea bags. We take great pride in offering only top-quality matcha tea powder for your drinking pleasure.”


It’s rather expensive but I prefer The Republic of Tea‘s brand of matcha, it’s very smooth and has a high caffeine level that can replace a morning cup of coffee (good to know in case you ever run out of coffee and are looking for a substitute), as you can see by this cool video they have on their Facebook page. I think it’s worth the price because I’ve tried many green teas and never quite warmed up to the taste of green tea until I found matcha. You do have to sweeten it with something like sugar, honey, agave or stevia, I prefer the agave because it is low-glycemic and I don’t get sugar spikes.

When I do drink it cold, I enjoy it over ice and usually with coconut milk, because it is also sweet in flavor, low calorie, low-glycemic and stimulates thyroid function. I was looking for the health benefits of drinking green tea, but I couldn’t stand the taste of most green teas. I’ve also read about the benefits of weight loss and the decrease of certain cancers by drinking green tea, which was why when I had my first Starbucks iced green tea latte with coconut milk, I was really impressed that it was green tea and tasted so good and smooth!

It is the purest form of green tea and can also be used for baking, and also in chocolate recipes, too. Matcha has more antioxidant properties than drinking green tea alone because you consume the whole green tea leaf.
